SUMMARY:Careers in Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to the last summer public night of 2026 at Cronyn Observatory! \nHave you ever wondered what an astronomer actually does? Spoiler: it’s not just night sky observing. Prof. Pauline Barmby joins us on Saturday\, August 29th to pull back the curtain on what a career in astronomy really looks like – the research\, the surprises\, the different paths that lead people into the field\, and the many doors a background in astronomy can open. \nAs always\, the Observatory will be open for tours and hands-on demos. If the skies cooperate\, we’ll have the telescopes out for one last look at the summer sky. 🔭 \nFree\, no registration needed. Just show up. \nVenue: Cronyn Observatory\, Western University\n Date: Saturday\, August 29th\, 2026\n Time: 8:30 to 11:00 pm \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:International observe the Moon night
DESCRIPTION:We have a fun day planned for you at Cronyn Observatory on Saturday\, September 19th – International Observe the Moon Night! 🌕 \nThis annual event takes place in September or October\, when the Moon is around first quarter – a great phase for evening observing. A first quarter Moon offers excellent viewing opportunities along the terminator (the line between night and day)\, where shadows bring the Moon’s cratered landscape to life. \nThis special event runs all day with something for everyone – bring the family out in the afternoon or join us for a regular public night in the evening. \nAfternoon (2:00 to 6:00 pm) – perfect for kids and families:\n 🔍 Moon Mythbusters – can you tell Moon facts from Moon myths?\n 🌑 Crater Making Activity – create your own craters with flour and chocolate powder\n 🪨 Moon Meteorites – get up close with real Moon rocks \nWe will also set up a solar telescope for the Sun\, and we’ll be able to observe the Moon (after 4:00 pm) and Venus. The observatory will be open for tours as well. \nEvening (7:00 to 11:00 pm) – The evening part will be kicked off by a presentation on the Moon by Peter Jedicke\, followed by a tour of the observatory and telescopes out for night sky observing if skies are clear. 🔭 \nFREE admission\, no registration required! Drop in for any part of the day. \nVenue: Cronyn Observatory\, Western University\n Date: Saturday\, September 19th\, 2026\n Time: 2:00 to 11:00 pm (with a break from 6:00 to 7:00 pm)\nWe hope to see you there.
