SUMMARY:A Cosmic Treasury: Remembering Mark Tovey
DESCRIPTION:On 20 August each year\, the Cronyn Observatory holds a special public night celebrating the historical and cultural heritage of this Observatory — the building\, its instruments\, and the people who have looked through them since 1940. [Read about A Cosmic Treasury and how it got its name.] \nThis first evening is held in memory of Mark Tovey\, Curator of the Observatory from 2015 until his death in January 2026\, on what would have been his birthday. [Read more about Mark] \nThe Observatory’s three “time machines” — the period rooms Mark designed\, recreated as they once might have been — will be open\, with guides on hand to tell the story of how they were made. And when skies are clear\, the telescopes will run until 11:00pm\, including the 1940 refractor. \nFree and drop-in. If it is cloudy\, the evening goes ahead indoors. \nWestern will lower the flag at University College to half mast that day in Mark’s honour.

SUMMARY:Lunar eclipse watch party
DESCRIPTION:Come watch the Moon turn red with us! 🌕 \nCronyn Observatory is hosting a Lunar Eclipse Watch Party on Thursday\, August 27\, from 9 PM to 1 AM. We’ll have telescopes set up and ready for you. \n\nWhat you’ll see: At its peak\, almost the entire Moon — about 96% of it — will be swallowed by Earth’s shadow\, leaving just a thin bright sliver along one edge. The rest will glow deep red and copper. \n\nTiming: The eclipse starts around 9:20 PM\, but the real show begins near 10:30 PM\, when you’ll see a dark bite appear on the Moon’s face. It’s at its deepest and reddest around 12:15 AM\, then the shadow slowly slides back off. Come whenever — it all happens gradually\, so there’s no single moment to miss. \nUnlike a solar eclipse\, this one is completely safe to watch with your own eyes. Binoculars help\, and our telescopes will give you a spectacular view. \nFree\, family-friendly\, and no registration required. We hope to see you there! \nVenue: Cronyn Observatory\, Western University \nDate: Thursday\, August 27th\, 2026 \nTime: 9:00 pm to 1:00 am \nIn the event of unfavourable weather\, we will post a cancellation notice on our website and social media.
