DESCRIPTION:Come watch the Moon turn red with us! 🌕 \nCronyn Observatory is hosting a Lunar Eclipse Watch Party on Thursday\, August 27\, from 9 PM to 1 AM. We’ll have telescopes set up and ready for you. \n\nWhat you’ll see: At its peak\, almost the entire Moon — about 96% of it — will be swallowed by Earth’s shadow\, leaving just a thin bright sliver along one edge. The rest will glow deep red and copper. \n\nTiming: The eclipse starts around 9:20 PM\, but the real show begins near 10:30 PM\, when you’ll see a dark bite appear on the Moon’s face. It’s at its deepest and reddest around 12:15 AM\, then the shadow slowly slides back off. Come whenever — it all happens gradually\, so there’s no single moment to miss. \nUnlike a solar eclipse\, this one is completely safe to watch with your own eyes. Binoculars help\, and our telescopes will give you a spectacular view. \nFree\, family-friendly\, and no registration required. DESCRIPTION:We have a fun day planned for you at Cronyn Observatory on Saturday\, September 19th – International Observe the Moon Night! 🌕 \nThis annual event takes place in September or October\, when the Moon is around first quarter – a great phase for evening observing. A first quarter Moon offers excellent viewing opportunities along the terminator (the line between night and day)\, where shadows bring the Moon’s cratered landscape to life. \nThis special event runs all day with something for everyone – bring the family out in the afternoon or join us for a regular public night in the evening. \nAfternoon (2:00 to 6:00 pm) – perfect for kids and families:\n 🔍 Moon Mythbusters – can you tell Moon facts from Moon myths?\n 🌑 Crater Making Activity – create your own craters with flour and chocolate powder\n 🪨 Moon Meteorites – get up close with real Moon rocks \nWe will also set up a solar telescope for the Sun\, and we’ll be able to observe the Moon (after 4:00 pm) and Venus. The observatory will be open for tours as well. \nEvening (7:00 to 11:00 pm) – The evening part will be kicked off by a presentation on the Moon by Peter Jedicke\, followed by a tour of the observatory and telescopes out for night sky observing if skies are clear. 🔭 \nFREE admission\, no registration required!
